Recently in the prayer time at my church, the brother leading corporate prayer discovered the “door”. That is, he found the “secret place” for the service — the place where we abide in God’s presence (See Psalm 91). In his prayer, a beautiful phrase came up from his spirit —

SHOW US THE WAY.

He continued in prayer and the service transitioned. But he left me at that one-sentence prayer. I want to share with you the meaning of this prayer.

…And you know the way where I am going. Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no man comes to the Father but through Me.” ~ John 14:4-6 NASB

This scripture came to mind while the service continued and Holy Spirit opened my eyes. When we pray “Show us the way,” we ask the Father to reveal Jesus in our path. Our desire is to follow Jesus; that’s what disciples do. And when we pray for direction, for what to do, for God to show us the way, we pray for a revelation of Jesus in this way.

if-a-man-fights-his-way-through.jpgAs we and those we know pray for God to show us the way, let’s encourage one another to look for Jesus. Look for His revealed presence in our specific circumstance. In the preceding verses of John 14, Jesus exhorts us to have no fear when we face uncertainties (while looking for stability and settling) because He goes ahead of us to prepare ways and places.

But how, says the searching one. How do we know…the way? Lord, show us this way. That word know can be tricky…especially for those of us who cannot shrug off the unknown. It’s a real effort for some of us to believe God’s got us and move ahead in faith. But don’t fear your questions and doubts. Press into them and consider John 14. Jesus is ahead of us…and He is with us. Look for Him…as the way, as the answer.

The answer is wrapped up in the revelation of Jesus; it always is. Revelation moves us through the vague and general notions of our personal views of God (or “gods”) and into the clarity of Jesus.

Yes Lord, show us the way.
