Okay dear ones, no offense intended. This note is about communication in the workplace. I’ll begin by sharing some advice from my pastor.
Learn to master your first reaction.
Take a moment and think about it. Simply stated, bring it in…and stay in control. Consider 1 Thessalonians 4:4 (KJV)
That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and in honor.
Keep it together, when you get what you and want and especially when you do not. The rest of us after enough rolled eyes, rolled necks, fake smiles, and sound effects (answering or communicating with grunts or other noises) want you to use your words.
Stay in control of your responses. Make it a personal prayer focus. Do not say every thing you think…AND, do not wear on your face the expressions that match what you’re not saying but thinking. (If it’s a problem now, then it’s something you’ll need to keep monitoring until you master this. Ask me how I know…)
In a sense, it’s a game face. But this game is life. We take our cues from you on how to interact with you, and while you may not feel like it or physically feel up to it, give us a hint. A soft word that you’ve had a tough day…or make a joke.
I was once adamant that it is on others to check their perspective, but over the years I had to admit that in some cases, message received is indeed message sent. Believe it or not Sister 20-something, you can burn bridges this way. At the very least, you can weaken the support of a bridge you may need later.
Bottom line: let the glorious beauty that is you help you communicate with us. Take stock and possess your vessel. Above all, develop clear communication skills.
